Casa Don Alfonso used to be known as Don Alfonso 1890 before the Michelin-starred restaurant moved to Grand Lisboa Palace in 2021. The original space was then converted into a much more casual Italian restaurant centred around pizzas, pasta and family-style dining.
A colleague and several members of the Don Alfonso 1890 team encouraged me to return, all of them raving about the pizzas. Given the connection between the two restaurants, I was curious to see what remained.
Unfortunately, the first warning sign arrived before the food did. At seven o’clock on a Friday night, the restaurant was practically empty.
The Pizza Ricca ($230) is one of their bestsellers, so I had to give it a try. I asked for it without the balsamic dressing because I don’t particularly like balsamic, but that probably exposed the pizza’s biggest weakness. Topped with Parma ham, rocket and plenty of cheese, it was far too dry, with very little tying the ingredients together. After a while, all I could taste was cheese, and the whole thing ate more like a salad than a pizza. 2 stars

The Quattro Stagioni Pizza ($220) was better, but only because it swung too far in the opposite direction. Where the first pizza desperately needed more sauce, this one felt like a sauce party. The mushrooms, ham and artichokes gave it some personality, but nothing on the plate suggested I was eating at a restaurant carrying the Don Alfonso name. 2 stars

Perhaps other parts of the menu are stronger, but I came for the pizzas, ordered one of their bestsellers and left disappointed by both.
The wine list also left me scratching my head. There are thousands and thousands of labels, yet very few seem to come in under $1,000. And as every Macau wine drinker knows, a bottle selling for $1,500 in a restaurant can often be found around town for $200.
Simply put, the wine is still priced like you’re dining at Don Alfonso 1890 when you’re not. The restaurant went casual, but the wine list never got the memo.
Casa Don Alfonso may not be a terrible restaurant. But two mediocre pizzas and a wine list detached from reality were still more than enough to ensure I won’t return.
