Coloane Pier Ribbon Soup Shop

(Last update: May 31, 2024)

Coloane Pier Ribbon Soup Shop has a couple of outlets in Coloane Village, neither of which you should be burning dining visits on.

If you happen to be in sleepy Coloane and feel like Chinese, then it’s Chan Chi Mei Choi Kun all the way. For Portuguese, try the daily specials at to Espaco Lisboa, or any of the 5 or so dishes they do extremely well (Duck Rice, Barbecue Chicken, Seafood Rice, Clams with Garlic, Prawns with Garlic.) If you’re in a group and want a more lively venue, with beers, song and music, try the criminally unknown Sea View Coffee, which is actually a full fledged restaurant, despite what its name suggests.

Coloane Pier Ribbon Soup Shop is so soaked in mid that I thought I was back on the mainland. With dishes like Beef Rice ($46), Curry Beef Rice ($48), and Black Pepper Steak ($68), you might be wondering where the food court is, or how Macau could ever be considered a great gastronomical city.

With all due respect, the Maven didn’t write 10 Can’t Miss Dishes for no reason, people! If you’re eating stuff like this when in Macau, then you’re eating the wrong thing!

Their noodle dishes are just as insignificant, simply tossing some meat or vegetables on top of thin wispy noodles, with two pieces of green lettuce thrown in, for no good reason I can see.

They do plain plates of meat best, which is the same meat they add to their rice and noodle dishes, as with the pork noodles above. Obviously intended to be a snack or an appetizer, the problem is you can’t go there and order just that. You need something of sustenance to follow, which I don’t think will be forthcoming.

Any anonymous cafe in Zhuhai is serving up the same stuff as Coloane Pier Ribbon Soup Shop, for half the price. Save such plain, uninspiring food for those situations when you simply have no other choice.

One more reason not to go? They apparently still serve real, honest to goodness Shark Fin’s Soup ($85), which my girlfriend ordered on one of her solo visits.

Forgive her for not grasping why it’s wrong to throw a shark back in the water without its fin, but that’s why cultural differences exist, I suppose.
