Mac Thai

(Last updated: December 28, 2025)

You’re in the basement of a budget hotel. Their concept is half Thai, half Macanese (and they can’t do either of them right).

Heard enough yet?

To be fair, Mac Thai’s visuals are mildly interesting: cabinets of old plates, mismatched chairs, fake stairwell murals, thrift-store art, and a bar that looks like it was built from whatever was lying around. Quirky to look at, sure. But the food has tourist trap written all over it. If you live in Macau, there is no reason to be here.

The Duck Rice was $199 and somehow managed to taste like absolutely nothing. No contrast, no texture. The duck had no flavour and no life left in it. Everything was falling apart, none of it on purpose. One star.

The Alheira was $90, flown in from Portugal, and tasted exactly like something you’d grab from a supermarket freezer. Two stars, at best.

The food was already bad, and then it got uncomfortable.  I had ordered the duck rice without the egg. When it arrived with the egg anyway, the boss woman completely lost it.

On the phone, barking into the kitchen: “Rosie, what the f—— are you doing? I told you no egg!”

Whoa.

Come on.

Listening to her tear into a staff member like that, especially someone who relies on a job and a blue card just to stay in Macau, was gross. It was ugly, unnecessary, and wildly out of proportion. And the tirade didn’t end there. More angry Cantonese followed, and honestly, I was relieved not to understand the details.

Mac Thai is going nowhere fast. I usually give restaurants a second chance now that I live in Macau and can return easily. But between the poor food and abhorrent attitude, no thanks.

And 1.5 stars feels generous.
