VIP Rates

(Last updated: May 3, 2024)

Most casinos in Macau offer promotional chip programs for high rolling VIP guests, who are also called “whales”.  In most cases, these chips cannot be exchanged for cash, only for gambling, although exceptions are sometimes made at smaller casinos, where buy in figures are significantly lower.

Also referred to as “dead chips”, promotional chips are easy to pick out from normal cash chips, given they are larger in size and shaped like squares, instead of being small and circular.  Players involved in these programs are paid in normal cash chips when they win bets, and surrender dead chips when they lose bets.  Once they are all out of dead chips they can exchange the normal cash chips they have accumulated for more dead chips, thereby accruing more rolling turnover, or they can simply cash them in.

These VIP programs are very good for the player, and I would definitely advise you to join one if you can if you can afford the high buy ins, which usually start from $10,000 HKD. The only game you’ll be able to play is Baccarat, and the chart below shows the adjusted house edge for the Banker and Player bet, after taking the cash back rebate into account.

The Macau government has capped the rate of return at 1.25%, so don’t blame the operators for not going any higher!

In an effort to attract more international high rollers, three major casino operators now offer non-mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwanese players slightly higher commissions than what they give to locals.  Such VIPs must play in a “foreigner only” rooms, almost all of which are found in Cotai.

Galaxy Macau

Players only have 14 days to amass rolling turnover.  The rates over $5,000,000 are open to negotiation.

Melco Entertainment

The rates at Melco are all 0.05% higher than what they give local Chinese players.

SJM takes the cake for me, given they return 1.1% after an extremely low $50,000 buy in.

MGM, Sands and Wynn don’t offer any special rates for foreigners, choosing to extend the same commission figures they give to local players.  You can find those numbers below, as well as the cash back rates for every other VIP program in Macau, with casinos grouped by concessionaire.
